MARCH 2023
Hi! I wanted to let you know that I am now creating a "wellness" theme for online classes each month with the intention of focusing on something specific for a longer period of time. This consistency can offer better support for the body and mind.

The theme for March classes is STABILITY. This comes before strength & mobility and creates a solid foundation for them. We can create stability in the body by using what is called progressive overload which means the body is more stable by constantly giving it more resistance. Our bones, muscles and connective tissue stay more stable this way. And when they are stable they can get stronger with less chance of injury.

We also have areas in the body that need to be more stable and others that need to be mobile. This is a sensitive relationship because if a mobile joint becomes stable (for example the ankle) then it effects the function of the joints closest to it. So in classes we will work to keep them the way they are meant to function!

Tissue tolerance is another important concept. We need to develop tissue tolerance by starting off with smaller loads/resistance and then continue to add to that. The body goes into an adaptive response to the stimulus it is given and will get stronger. The same goes if we don't move enough or are not giving the body enough of a challenge...the body gets weaker.

As we age, we want to prevent sarcopenia which is defined as the gradual loss of muscle mass. The most common cause of this is the natural aging process and we can gradually begin losing muscle mass and strength in our 40s. This process can pick up at around age 65. Rates vary but you may lose as much as 1 lb of lean body mass each year. However, it is possible to maintain it we just have to consistently work at it!

Revitalize & Renew: 7 Day Spring Yoga Challenge

Revitalize your body and mind, renew your energy and shake off the heaviness of winter. Take time for you before the busyness of each day begins. This challenge will include 7 short yoga classes (30-40min) with a bonus 60min class that was recorded outside on the ravine bridge. A nice reminder of our outdoor practices and that spring is just around the corner!

Set to some fun music, the first half of this class starts with weight training exercises to build stability and strength in the body and will include some short cardiovascular exercises as well. You will then move into active stretching exercises that will decrease stiffness and soreness in the areas that you worked.
