MARCH!
Hi all! Yay, spring is just around the corner. As we head into March, I am still waiting until group fitness classes (which is where our classes fit in) are allowed to run again. The waiting is a challenge but what has been more difficult is the repetitive opening and closing. So I am not going to reopen in person classes until everything has stabilized and I know that enough people will attend. Each time I have had to close and then reopen, it is like building a new business from scratch. The virus is ever changing so that is why I have worked on getting more online offerings out to you and also have an online membership so it is more affordable, easy to access and you don't have to wait on your wellness regime. Now is the time to stay strong, mobile & flexible, in body and in mind. :)

We can change the brain with our mind!
Currently I am in a 108HR Meditation Teacher Training with Lifestyle Meditation so I can learn more to support and help others.
There is so much research that shows we can change our brain with our mind. Even the size of the amygdala (which is our guard dog and is what gets activated when in a stressful situation) can get bigger with chronic stress and trauma (causing it to over work)... and it can also shrink by implementing tools of mindfulness and meditation.
A revolution in science has, in recent years, revealed that the adult brain remains open to change throughout the entire lifespan. Though many brain scientists used to believe that the mind is just the activity of the brain, we now look at the connection between brain and mind differently. When we consider the mind as an embodied and relational process that regulates the flow of energy and information, we come to realize that WE CAN ACTUALLY USE THE MIND TO CHANGE THE BRAIN.
How we focus our attention and how we intentionally direct the flow of information and energy through our neural circuits, can directly alter the brain's activity and structure. The key is understanding how neural networks and pathways are created and how mindful awareness can promote the creation of greater mental and physical well-being.
"The brain has circuitry, but no wires; the circuits are made of living tissue. More importantly, they are reshaped by thoughts, memories, desires and experiences." ~ Dr.Rudolph Tanzi (Professor of Neurology, Harvard University)
Put simply, neuroplasticity is the brain's ability to adapt and change. By forming new neural connections throughout life, the brain is able to 'reorganize' itself and adapt to changing needs. Self directed (mindful) neuroplasticity is the ability to change your own brain, which is the process that can assist with changing our habits, dependancies and addictions.
The science (on how long it can take to change), is still disputable however, there are studies that show that choosing the same behaviour consistently for a minimum of 21 days, creates engrained habits (neural pathways) in the brain that can be difficult to change. That is why we see a lot of 21 or 30 Day Challenges which can help establish a new habit!

About Janelle:
My love of practicing yoga started back in 2001. I practiced for a long time before a major life event pushed me to dive deep and I thought a teacher training would be perfect for the personal growth I was craving. It was challenging for me and it changed my life! I did not go to training with the intention of teaching and did not think I would  actually teach but after doing some practice teaching regularly with a group of friends, I ended up seeing (and hearing!) how well they felt and the changes they were experiencing! That pushed me to start teaching on a regular basis. And I say push because even though I have been an extrovert in the past, I am also very introverted and am an empath so teaching in front of a group of people was initially very scary for me!

I started teaching in 2009. Yoga has a way of elevating my sense of well-being and is incredible for building overall strength, stability & mobility. Staying focused on breath and movement calms my body and mind. I love being able to access different practices depending on what it is I am needing each day. I have experienced burn out and yoga has been my saving grace in giving me tools to calm my nervous system down and bring my body back from chronic fatigue. I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's Thyroiditis (most common form of hypothyroidism) back in 2000 and I am happy to say that today my doctor can not find any sign of it! I contribute that healing to yoga, eating the right foods and listening to my body each and every day.  I continue to teach in the hopes that I can help others feel lifted, supported and cared for each time they step on to their mat. xo
