HI!
Some Springtime Thoughts....
To me, the energy of spring allows for renewal, rejuvenation, rebirth & being grateful for the life that rises up from the darkness of winter. It is also about letting go of things that do not serve my soul.

Recently I have been learning so much about letting go and surrendering. Old traumas have been resurfacing as I navigate through things. And for me, I only get triggered because there is still more healing to be done so I see it as an opportunity for more growth. If a situation triggers me, I ask myself what it is about the situation that reminds me of something from the past and how can I heal it? There are also layers to my emotional and physical response. Under anger is pain and under pain is fear. Fear of something that was felt in the past- abandonment, rejection or shame (even if it happened a long time ago, the body still has a way of responding in defence and this is where yoga and meditation have helped so much to rinse it out one practice at a time and to connect my mind and body back together again). Through communication with those I feel safe with, there is an opportunity for great conversation, growth and helping the mind and body create new pathways, and to heal and diffuse the power of a trauma over me. And slowly, it starts to dissipate. There have been many difficult experiences I have had with my dad throughout the years and now that he is not well, some have come up but have also been healed throughout this last year of trying to help him get well.

I am sharing the above lyrics because of a powerful experience I had with him. When dad was first recovering from his stroke I took him to the healing garden at U of A Hospital and all of a sudden he sang those exact lyrics to me as I pushed him in his wheelchair. I know it came straight from his soul. Dad loves the Beatles but I was in awe that those lyrics are what came to him. It was beautiful.

I think the hardest thing now is that dad can't play his guitar, saxophones or flute anymore but he still has that genius inside him. So I am learning from him and am reminded to continue learning what I can as some do not get the opportunity. That goes for playing music and singing. And moving my body too. I am so lucky I can breathe on my own and move without pain. This gift is something I will do everything I can to keep.

Seeing dad recover from a stroke, then get pneumonia that he caught at the hospital and lose his walking, have 3 emergency visits over Xmas, have a COPD aspiration, and refuse care and treatment through it all has created a constant state of anxiety and many difficult moments. But then there have also been times of love. One thing I am still learning is to not take on anymore than I can. I listen to my body when I need to rest. I do not visit unless I am 100% ok otherwise I am not a good support for him. I also can not force dad to eat. Or get him to see life through different eyes from how he has viewed the world for 74 years. All I can do is accept him and love him. And SURRENDER all of it.

No one knows what the long term care system is like until they are in it and the advocacy never ends. There is no proactive care and the family has to stay on top of things, buy extra food & pay for extra caregiving. I cannot imagine what it is like for those who have no one to be a voice for them. And the drug cocktail they give seniors is frightening. Something has to change.

There is such aloneness in all of this but I also know in that aloneness there is togetherness too because we all experience loss. I do know I can’t do this by myself anymore. Thank goodness for companions that go to see him. And to my mom, brother and partner who listen to my sadness as I navigate through many things like forgiveness, letting go and just loving because that’s really all I can do for him now. And I’m grateful for those who have just reached out to ask about him and have gone to see him. He’s such a smart man and even in his fatigued and weak state, he still shows compassion for me and others. He said the other day “it must be hard for you to see your dad like this?” And I said yes and started crying and he said “you’re ok”..I don’t remember the last time I was comforted by him...and even though my life with my dad has had so many struggles and I did not have him in my life for many many years, in seeing someone who may now be dying, all there is is love. And seeing all of this is taking me down a new path with a lot of change ahead.

I find comfort in and I always come back to a quote my wise mother shared with me:
The "I" that is me, you cannot see
You see only the form that you think is me.
The form that you see, will not always be
But the "I" that is me, lives eternally.

Love, light and gratitude to all of you. Please reach out if you need support because you are not alone.
I am so grateful for every person who warms up the studio and also brightens my life. All of you have been my light in the darkness.
xoxo
Janelle

Restorative/Yin Yoga & Essential Oils for Stress Relief

The intention of this class is to provide a safe space for students to let go of tension and cultivate peace and balance. Poses will be held between 3-5minutes, and the body will be supported by props to allow the nervous system to thoroughly unwind. There will be use of essential oils that are specifically chosen for their calming, grounding & stress-relieving properties. The human body was not designed to handle being in a state of fight or flight constantly. In order to help the body and mind optimally deal with the challenges of daily life, it is crucial that we cultivate stillness and silence to switch into the parasympathetic nervous system which can give your body time to rest and your mind the space to unwind and let go. To help complete this practice, we will finish with a short yoga nidra session.
9 week session: $142

Sundays @ 10am
Suspended Sanctuary: A Floating Yoga Nidra
(Optional: bring your own hammock!)

Receive deep rest and restoration in this extremely healing practice.Yoga Nidra has been referred to as sleep yoga and it has been said that 30 minutes of it is equivalent to 4 hours of sleep. You will be guided as you rest, allowing your mind and body to slip into a deep state of relaxation. The brain switches from beta to alpha waves, signalling the transition from activity to rest. The practice can be used to calm the nervous system decreasing stress on the entire body. And if you have trouble sleeping, this can support your body to move into deeper rest.
We have extra props for you to use but you are welcome to bring your own blanket, eye pillow and whatever else you need for support.
Feedback needed please! Some of you may enjoy the floating sensation of using a hammock. Please bring your own hammock and stand if you wish to try this! If we get enough pre-registered for this class, we will be purchasing some hammocks for you to use at the studio!
